How to show week numbers in Mac calendar
“Let's ship this in week 12” — now you can actually see which week that is.
If your team uses week numbers for planning (“sprint starts week 8”, “launch in W14”), you need them visible in your calendar. Without them, you're always counting weeks manually or Googling “what week number is it.”
Enabling week numbers in Apple Calendar
Apple Calendar supports week numbers, but it's not obvious where to enable them. Go to Calendar → Settings → Advanced and check “Show week numbers.” Week numbers will appear in the left margin of the month and week views.
The numbers follow the ISO 8601 standard, where week 1 is the first week containing a Thursday. This is the same standard used in most of Europe and in business contexts.
The limitation
Apple Calendar shows week numbers, but only when the app is open. If you use a menu bar calendar for quick glances, you might want week numbers there too — visible at a glance without opening a full app.
Week numbers in Dot
Dot shows week numbers directly in the calendar grid. They appear in the left column of each week row, always visible when the calendar is open.
- •Week numbers shown in the month grid (toggleable in settings)
- •ISO 8601 standard numbering
- •Week progress bar showing how far through the current week you are
- •Year progress bar showing the current week in context of the year
Turn week numbers on in Dot → Preferences → Display.
